5 km from the village of Gruissan, the Canal de la Robine flows peacefully towards the Mediterranean. Lateral branch of the Canal du Midi, the Robine, as the Narbonnais affectionately call it, was dug in the old course of the Aude and links the Somail to Port la Nouvelle by crossing the unspoiled landscapes of the Narbonnaise Regional Natural Park in Mediterranean.
The Canal du Midi is visible in Somail, a charming little river port located 40 minutes from Gruissan, where restaurants, an old bookstore and banks offer a refreshing stopover to the traveler. Built in the 17th century by Pierre-Paul RIQUET, this revolutionary engineering structure has 63 locks along its 240km and connects the Atlantic with the Mediterranean. On foot, by bike or better, aboard a barge, enjoy the sweetness of Occitan life by surveying this jewel of our department, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
