Imposing and majestic in its verdant setting, the abbey was founded under Charlemagne in 779. It was the largest abbey in the department and has since become one of its most beautiful architectural treasures. Facing the medieval town, listed among "The Most Beautiful Villages of France," this imposing Benedictine monument commands respect and presents a breathtaking catalog of architecture from the 8th to the 18th centuries.
We discover the essentially medieval buildings: the courtyard of the abbey dwelling, the cellar, the chapels and their vestibules, the sacristy, the north transept, the pre-Romanesque tower, the lapidary depository, the ceremonial room as well as the partly restored dormitory in 2009.
“The medieval abbey of Lagrasse, cultural center The arts of reading” aims to identify the abbey with the world of writing and the debate of ideas, while continuing the process of promoting the heritage of the monument.
In this living place, visitors will be able to discover the abbey but also attend activities of meetings and studies around the book, the debate of ideas and the image.
A bookstore and shop are also fully integrated into this space. A literary café is open from May to September.
For groups, reservations are required.
