The Town of Gruissan's big game fishing challenge is set to become one of the biggest tournaments in Europe.
With a record number of participants, the Town of Gruissan Big Game Fishing Challenge will take place from August 13 to 17 (August 12, reception of participants). The Gruissan Thon Club, a key player in the Port of Gruissan for 44 years, is preparing to mark a decisive turning point in the history of sport fishing in France and beyond.
40 years of big game fishing passion
40 years ago, the first big game fishing world cup was organized in Gruissan. The Gruissan Thon Club wants to bring back to life the intensity of this race. Dozens of boats will be moored at the port on the same quay, as in 1984. They will set off every morning at 8 a.m. for a striking spectacle in a unique setting, Gruissan.
A participation record
For this exceptional edition, 30 boats and 120 participants will set out to attack the waters of Gruissan, hunting tuna or swordfish. Last year, 17 boats and 70 participants were registered. This unprecedented attendance testifies to the new dynamic instilled by the Gruissan Thon Club, under the direction of its new president, Jean-Christophe SOULIÉ. Thon Club: the revival
Since 2023, a young and dynamic team has given new impetus to the association, by exploiting social networks to attract new members. Thanks to innovative communication and the enthusiasm generated, the club now has 220 members, compared to 130 in 2022.
The support of the Town of Gruissan and the Tourist Office was also decisive. Brand new premises will soon be inaugurated, offering the club an ideal setting to continue to promote sport fishing.
This year, the Gruissan Thon Club is celebrating two major events: the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Port of Gruissan, and the 40th anniversary of the first big game fishing world cup in Gruissan, which saw the participation of more than twenty countries. .
The Gruissan Big Game Fishing Challenge therefore promises to be an event not to be missed. It attracts not only fishing enthusiasts, but also curious people and tourists who come to discover this spectacular event.
